about

It is not easy to surprise me, considering all the music I have listened to in my life, and yet this quartet has managed to strike me with its extraordinary strength, just like a tornado. I already knew these musicians. Years ago, when Bigoni and Ponticelli, two extraordinary debutants, had played in one of my groups, I had already appreciated their amazing talent and musicality. The progress they have made since then is almost incredible. I recently had the pleasure of playing with Diodati, who is for sure one of the most passionate and interesting soloists on the current scene, although I was unaware of his gifts as composer and leader as well. In this record these gifts literally explode. I also heard good things said about Baron but never had listened to him live before. His work on this occasion confirms what I had heard about him. But more than individual abilities, although extraordinary, what really striked me about the quartet’s music is the members’ great skill of reciprocal listening and sharing the same musical view. You can hear these musicians “living” the pieces they are playing with such concentration so as to transform a musical event into a mystic experience. The result is a fresco in which each musician gives what he feels is necessary and all receive what they need. There’s no room for any narcissistic virtuosity. Facing this, the only thing we can do is break down defences and let a flood of almost painful feelings and colours inundate us. Sweetness, strength, tension, love, violence. The pieces are almost all composed by Diodati. They unwind with logic and coherence and create a perfect dramatic suite. Last but not least, the brilliant touch of ending the cd with one of Monk’s most beautiful and less popular pieces, “Brilliant Corners”, which is so difficult to play that very few jazz players have given it a try. Neko’s rendition is really marvelous and original. It doesn’t renounce to develop a group’s peculiar sound but at the same time doesn’t betray the spirit of great Thelonious, which makes us conclude that, in the end, Monk himself is the tutelary deity of this amazing band.
